Hymn During Offering “The Old Rugged Cross”
1) On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
Refrain: So I’ll cherish the Crucified Lord,,
For His righteousness has become mine.
I will cling to the Crucified Lord,
And by faith receive one day a crown.
2) O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary. Refrain:
3) In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see;
For ‘twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died
To pardon and sanctify me. Refrain:
4) To the Crucified Lord I will ever be true,
His shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me someday to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share. Refrain:
THE SERVICE OF DARKNESS (TENEBRAE)
(When Christ was crucified, darkness covered the land from noon till 3 pm; what happened in the last hours of our Savior’s life on earth was shrouded in darkness. From the fourth century, a solemn observance of darkness or “tenebrae” has been a reminder of the darkness on that first Good Friday. Light will be turned on again to remind us that the death of Christ is not the end of His ministry to us.)

(A time of silence will be observed as the Christ candle is removed.)
Lord’s Prayer (spoken softly by all)
(During the darkness the congregation is invited to meditate silently on Christ’s suffering and death. After a time, a loud noise is made symbolizing the earthquake at the time of Christ’s death and the closing of the tomb. The candle is returned to its place, symbolizing that our redemption is complete. Please leave in silence. Our Holy Week devotion continues with our Easter Vigil service tomorrow at 6:30 pm and our Easter Sunrise service on Sunday at 6 am, and Easter Divine Service 8:30 am and 10:30 am; join us often.)
