GOOD SHEPHERD
NEWS & NOTES
JUNE 20, 2010

WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee, juice, goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible Study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.

BIBLE STUDY TODAY: You are invited to meet in the fellowship hall at 9:20 am today for coffee, juice, goodies and the study of God’s Word. This class is currently exploring the New Testament book of Colossians which was written by the Apostle Paul to the new congregation at Colossae. He writes words of warning about false teachers and false doctrine and also words of encouragement. Come and take advantage of the opportunity to dig into God’s Word.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: For the summer Sunday School sessions, children will be grouped differently and may be in a different classroom. Below are the groups and classrooms.
Preschool/Kind. - lower level - Rm. 020 (the Sunday school preschool classroom/Mrs. Ahrens classroom

Grades 1-4 - lower level - Rm. 021 (the Sunday school grades1-2 classroom/Mrs. Burk’s classroom)

Grades 5-8 - main level - Rm. 106 (south side of stairs)

In Sunday School today the students study “God Controls the Sun and the Moon” (Joshua 10: 1-15). Help students understand that God extended the daylight so Joshua and the children of Israel could gain complete victory over their enemy. Parents could ask, “Why was it important for the people to gain complete victory? How does God give us the victory over our enemies: sin, death, and the devil?”

LIFE MOMENT: While teens may not be known for their ability to verbalize their feelings, they have the same needs as when they were tiny. There is no replacement for Dad’s attention, love, acceptance, and healthy affection. In its absence, a substitute will be sought. May Fathers’ Day be every parent’s reminder that their child really needs them!

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: GALATIANS 3: 23 - 4: 7: Since we have been redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus we are no longer slaves to the law who try to keep God’s Law perfectly. Rather, God’s law now becomes a guide for us in Christian living by the power of His Holy Spirit. Whether it is the management of our time, abilities, relationships or financial blessings we do it all as a joyful response to the love of our Beautiful Savior.

RUMMAGE SALE: The Good Shepherd School & Preschool Rummage Sale is scheduled for June 24, 25, & 26. Your assistance is needed in donating your still in good condition items for this event. So far, we are low on kitchen items, furniture, children’s clothing, and toys. If you have some items and you would like to “lighten the load” at home . . . we will take them! Mrs. Bock will be her on Monday, June 21st from 10 am - 4pm, and Tuesday, June 22nd from 10 am - 4 pm. If these times do not work for you, you can reach Mrs. Bock at 430-9108 for a time to bring items to the school.

MEN’S BIBLE STUDY: The Men’s Bible Study group meets on Tuesdays at 6 am for a time of exploring God’s Word and praying for one another. Pastor Poppe will lead a new study on the Old Testament book of Jonah. All men are invited.

HIGHER THINGS YOUTH CONFERENCE: The Higher Things group is leaving on June 28th for Logan, UT. We will be traveling on a tour bus with a group from Pastor Sherrill’s church in Council Bluffs. We will arrive at the conference on the morning of June 29th and will return on the morning of July 3rd.

YOUTH BIBLE STUDY: The Sr. High Youth Bible Study for the last two Sundays in June will be taught by Pastor Berndt in the upstairs youth room. We will be looking at two lessons put out by Higher Things Given Conference in preparation for those of us attending the Higher Things Conference on June 29th - July 2. These studies are good and Bible-based, so all youth can benefit from them.

JAZZ IN JUNE: The annual ladies outing to Jazz in June on the UNL campus will be on Tuesday, June 22nd. We plan to meet at 5:30 pm or as soon as you can get there at the downtown Applebees (1133 Q St.) for dinner. Then we will walk to the campus to enjoy the concert together. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. If you would like to carpool, meet in the church parking lot at 5 pm. Please put your name of the list at the information center and note if you want to carpool. See you there!

SEMI-ANNUAL VOTERS’ MEETING: Good Shepherd’s semi-annual voters’ meeting will be held on Monday, June 21st at 7 pm. On the agenda will be the election of officers for those whose terms are up this year and a discussion and approval of the budget for the July 2010 - June 2011 fiscal year. We have a full slate of candidates for the election. All communicant members of Good Shepherd are eligible to vote. Questions about this meeting or agenda may be directed to one of the pastors or Brent Stehlik.

ADAM MOLINE ORDINATION: Good Shepherd member, Adam Moline, will be ordained into the Office of the Holy Ministry on Saturday, June 26th at 2 pm at Good Shepherd. Adam graduated in May from the Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, IN and has been called to serve a dual parish in Hankinson, ND. The congregation is invited to share in this joyous celebration. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

THANK YOU: Thank you for the many cards, prayers and words of sympathy over the past 11 months. Cindy’s memorial service in Nashville was a beautiful expression of God’s love through Jesus Christ. Through songs and spoken word, the message of salvation through Christ was proclaimed. Joyce and I thank this congregation for the support you have given us over this long battle. Cindy is now cancer-free in the arms of Jesus.
Marvin & Joyce Thompson

MOWING VOLUNTEERS: Taking care of the lawn this week are Brendan Schmidt and Nate Keller. Thanks, guys!

ISSUES, ETC: Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken and produced by Lutheran Public Radio. Topics include: The Health & Wealth Gospel, The Patriarchs’ Wives, Hungarian Lutheranism Under Communism, The Cruelty of Heresy, A Review of Toy Story 3, The Miracles of Jesus, Is Global Warming a Religion?, Pro-Life Women in Politics, The Hymn “Lord, Thee I Love With All My Heart”, and more. You can listen to what you want when you want at www.issuesetc.org.

LUTHERANS FOR LIFE CONFERENCE: The Lutherans for Life National Conference will be held July 23-24 at the Tundra Lodge Resort in Green Bay, WI. The theme for this years conference is “Bringing the Good News to Life”. The keynote speaker is Wesley J. Smith, bioethicist. The conference will have great speakers, workshops and life-affirming fellowship. Lincoln Lutherans for Life will pay the registration fee ($105) for a first-time attendee. If you are interested, contact Lyn Maaske at 421-7363.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Good Shepherd has agreed to deliver one route of Tabitha Meals on Wheels on Sundays and one on Fridays. The Sunday route would be a good opportunity for families to serve those in need. We have just enough teams and families to cover our two routes for a six week period. This means that each team would deliver once every six weeks. We would like to be able to have enough volunteers to be able to have each team serve once every two months. If you would like to find out more about this opportunity, contact Patty Stradley at 783-5400.
